Our History

Fire protection in the Fife area began as a community-driven effort. On September 11, 1948, local voters approved the formation of Pierce County Fire Protection District No. 10, establishing a formal fire district to serve the growing area. The District was officially created by the Pierce County Commissioners later that month.

As the community evolved, so did its fire service structure. In 1957, the City of Fife incorporated, leaving only the unincorporated neighborhood of Fife Heights within the District’s boundaries. The newly formed City contracted with Fire District 10 for fire protection services, continuing a close partnership between the District and the community it served.

In 1987, voters approved the annexation of the City of Fife into Fire District 10, formally unifying fire protection services under one jurisdiction once again.

To further strengthen service delivery and regional coordination, Fire District 10 entered into a service agreement with the City of Tacoma in 1994. That partnership expanded operational capacity and reinforced a longstanding commitment to collaboration in public safety.

Today, the District’s history reflects decades of adaptation, partnership, and service to the Fife community — grounded in voter support and shaped by the needs of a growing region.
